Banks and financial services have featured heavily in the latest BRANDZ poll of the Top 100 Most Powerful Brands.
The survey, produced by Milward Brown Optimor in conjunction with the Financial Times, placed American Express, Deutsche Bank, the Bank of China and the Royal Bank of Canada in the top 50.
Furthermore, Marks and Spencer, Morgan Stanley and the Royal Bank of Scotland were all singled out for the strength of their branding.
Joanna Seddon, global chief executive officer of Milward Brown Optimor, said: "Success stories from this year's BRANDZ Top 100 demonstrate that winning brands leverage major market trends effectively to create business value.
"Strong brands are capable of extending into areas of opportunity to access new revenue streams and to help businesses respond to market changes."
The survey produced the results by using information on customer sentiment from a large database in brand equity in conjunction with financial measures.
Google topped the poll, with Microsoft, Coca-cola and Marlboro all ranking in the top ten.
The news follows reports that Google's profits have taken an upturn following growth in financial services advertising.
