Sainsbury's has publicised its travel insurance offering after research showed many people travel abroad with just a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).
A study for the company by ICM revealed that 3.5 million people travelled to the continent in the last year but did not take out travel insurance because they thought their EHIC was sufficient.
But Sainsbury's warned that it will only cover for state healthcare and will not look after costs for other services such as repatriation, unlike Sainsbury's product.
"A good quality travel insurance policy like our own doesn't just pick up the tab, it provides 24-hour emergency contacts who will help you resolve crisis situations whilst abroad, helping you bridge language barriers and supporting your loved ones should you... become seriously ill," said the firm's travel insurance manager, Sam Marrs.
The company also highlighted the fact that of respondents using their EHIC for medical treatment, more than half (51 per cent) ended up having to pay for some of it, with the average paying £386.
FirstAssist insurance services arrange and administer Sainsbury's travel insurance.
