At a gala dinner in London, Lloyds TSB could not have been handed better publicity than receive the award for Best Bank in the UK at the Euromoney Awards for Excellence.
Recognising the achievements of banks throughout Europe, Euromoney's Excellence awards have been running since 1992.
The reasoning behind the decision to award Lloyds TSB with the best bank prize was cited as its growing market share of mortgages and good asset quality in comparison to major competitors.
Euromoney noted that: "In a sea of unspectacular results Lloyds TSB's performance deserves much credit."
Truett Tate, group executive director for wholesale and international banking for the Lloyds TSB Group, accepted the award.
Mr Tate said he was delighted to receive it: "This is welcome recognition that our strategy is working and that the market is noticing. We've always had a strong history as a market-leading retail bank but our presence in the wholesale sector was more that of a 'sleeping giant'. It's fair to say that the giant is well and truly awake."
He concluded: "This award is a fantastic recognition of the success we have achieved across the whole business, with all of our divisions firing on all cylinders."
Not only can Lloyds now market itself as Best Bank in the UK, but for the third consecutive year it can promote itself as Bank of the Year after again picking up the CBI Finance Directors' Excellence Award of that name.
