Older tourists ignore travel insurance

Many over-55s are being "foolish" by not taking out travel insurance, according to the Association of British Travel Agents (Abta).

Older tourists are taking more adventure holidays than ever before and 13 per cent take more than five trips per day, according to Alliance & Leicester.

However research from the Foreign Office shows that around 65 per cent of over-55s ignored travel insurance marketing and went with none at all on their last trip.

Abta press officer Sean Tipton claims that older travellers are "very foolish" for not taking out insurance because they "are more likely to need it than other people".

He added: "They’ve been abroad a great many times and a lot of them are quite bored just sitting on a beach and they want to do something adventurous."

The market for older holiday-maker's travel insurance marketing is underlined further by Abta's own research which indicates that over-65s are three times more likely than over-35s to make a claim.
