Small and medium enterprises such as legal and accounting firms "will always benefit" from professional help with search engine marketing, according to the Internet Advertising Bureau (IAB).
With the growing reach of search engines and the frequency with which they are used there are many people offering free advice on how to make the most of the search engines.
However, Jack Wallington, programmes manager for the IAB warned: "The danger with optimisation - as with many areas of online - is that there is a lot of free advice available on the internet and it is not always possible to know what is correct and what isn't."
Google alone receives 81.9 million unique users per month and each one of those visitors could potentially be targeted with an ad.
"It is definitely advisable [for SMEs] to seek professional help," not only because experts will have experience on different campaigns, but also "because search engine marketing changes constantly and continues to increase in competitiveness," said Mr Wallington.
