Lesser known sports stars are being recruited to star in in-branch poster ads and online spots for a large US bank.
Howard Bach, an American badminton player has gone from being considered an extra in an advert to the main show as the Bank of America chooses to distance itself from big name stars who all seem to have been tarred by the scandals involving a few of them.
According to the Wall Street Journal baseball, football, basketball, cycling and track, all sports which are popular with fans and have big name stars also have been subject to scandals involving drugs, steroids, guns, gambling and dog-fighting.
A bank spokesman told the WSJ that smaller stars of disciplines such as kayaking, badminton, fencing and water polo are seen as cleaner and less likely to get caught up in scandal.
The lesser known Olympians may also connect to average customers more easily as in between training many hold down their own regular jobs.
In the UK footballers have been associated with violent and lewd behaviour.
